New York Times: Boy or Girl? The Answer May Depend on Mom’s Eating Habits
Wow! A link has been found between baby genders and skipping meals. Here’s a preview: “There was also a strong correlation between women eating breakfast cereals and producing sons.” This could mean strange things for cereal-naming professionals. Anyone up for a nice bowl of Cracklin’ Oat Man? How about Honey Boy-nches of Oats? (Gah. Sorry.)

New York Times: Recession Diet Just One Way to Tighten Belt
While the article takes a wholesale (no pun intended) approach to cutting back, it does offer a few illuminating restaurant and food stats. Much better than the CNN piece.

Turns out that peaches, strawberries, sweet bell peppers, celery, and lettuce get pretty good bang for the buck, while you don't really need to bother buying organic onions, mangoes, asparagus, broccoli and eggplant. Read the mile-long comment section for more.

Stockpiling is usually a good idea, but Iiiiiiii dunno about this piece. It's a tad alarmist, and the first of what will surely be many, “OKAY, IT’S TIME FOR EVERYBODY TO FREAK OUT!” articles on rising food prices. There’s no shortage in the U.S., so I'm thinkin' everybody needs to chill out for a sec. (Thanks to Like Merchant Ships for the link.)

Hi Kris! Thanks so much for the link love. Question: Do you find that you go to nice restaurants and think to yourself that it's so not worth the cost compared to what you could have prepared at home? I've felt that way for at least the last five years. The only time in recent memory that I thought an expensive meal was worth it was Pizzeria Mozza, Mario Batali's place in Hollywood. Otherwise, I always feel like I could have made a comparable meal at home for a lot less money. And this article proves my instincts were right! :)

Cathy! I totally find myself thinking things like that. I made it a policy recently to not go anywhere/order anything I could conceivably make at home better and for less money. It's cut down on a lot of those, "Man, this wasn't worth it" feelings.

Thanks for the mention! I personally did not realize how huge one's savings can be by using coupons. I still patronize some grocery stores and pay "retail" to some extent and writing a post about optimizing the use of coupons was an eye-opener to me. Yes, you can be a coupon master and it can save you TONS!

Depends on what you call a nice restaurant...Spiaggia makes, for the most part, food that I cannot replicate at home, so it's totally worth it (yeah, I can only afford to eat there once a year, but it's sublime).

If you are calling Biggi's or Marconi's a nice restaurant...well, I'm a better cook than any of their corporate executive chefs, but I don't eat there, either.
