Cheap Healthy Good: Now With Extra Columns!

Happy Presidents Day, universe! To celebrate our fine Commander-in-Chiefs, we here at CHG decided to go live with a brand spankin' new layout. Don't worry; all the extraneous features and sidebar thingies you've come to vaguely know and kinda love are still here. They're just in slightly different locations, with a picture of lasagna on top instead of cherries.

However! The design isn't 100% final yet, and we'd love to know your opinions. Are the colors pretty? Does the font agree with your eyes? Do you find lasagna close-ups to be particularly offensive, since one of them once mugged you in a parking lot back in '76? If so, these are important things to mention, and we encourage you to fire away in the comment section.

Special thanks to The Boyfriend for the web design and J (he of the Summertime Gazpacho) for the new logo. These upstanding gentlemen worked their butts off, and will be repaid with full-fat macaroni and cheese as soon as humanly possible.

We'll be back tomorrow with our regularly-scheduled posting. In the meantime, enjoy the holiday (and the new sidebar).

I love it except for the mint green background. It was the colour of my bedroom walls when I was a kid and now only screams "institutional" at me. Hmmm, that doesn't sound very good, does it? And the recipe index is great. Oh yes, one other nit picky thing and that is the top right sidebar is missing a border. I love your blog. :-)

I was slightly taken aback when I clicked back after looking at a link, only to find the familiar greys replaced with greens. I thought something was amiss, but I adjusted quickly. :)

While you're asking for comments/suggestions, I'm kind of wondering why there isn't a search engine for the site. Sure, I can look up posts under the labels section, should I happen to remember what label the recipe or link I remember was posted under... but I never do. Remember, that is.

Beautiful! I love the in-season fruits and vegetables right at the top!

I dig it!

I love it! That photo at the top is making me so hungry... and it's only 9:30 in the morning!

I think it looks great except for one thing - the soft focus on the lasagna pic. For some reason it is bothering me that I can't really look at it clearly. But maybe that's just me!

I love it!

Ooh, snazzy! I like it. Fun/new/different!

One suggestion: The "visited" link color for the left-hand sidebar blends in rather well with the sidebar background color... so it's a tad hard to read. (The right-hand one is fine.) :)

I love the new layout!

@Lake - In the nav bar at the top of the page is a Blogger search engine that generally works well for the site.

@Kris - I like it! It pops a lot more than the old template, and there's a ton of useful info.

Kris! It's gorgeous and super navigable, to boot. Great work to you, The Boyfriend, and J!

I like the new look!
Oh, and Lake has a good idea about a search engine for the site. :-)

I love it! Any chance you could add a link to the compilation lists (spices, summer squash/zuccini, etc) you've done previously? They're some of my favorite posts, but I can't ever seem to find them unless I stumble on a new one that links to the previous posts.

I miss "Mmmmm inexpensive". Somehow, it made me laugh every time and I think it characterizes your lovely, wry voice.

Love it! Especially love the soft-focus, soft-core food porn at the top! ;-)

I agree with DMBY about the out of focus lasagna. It was not the best picture that you could have chosen as a masthead...I keep trying to find the focus but there isn't one. Also, the two o's in good look kind of pupil-less and soul-less and kind of scare me.

Thanks, you guys, for all the feedback! Here's what I'm thinking...

About the search bar: I'll play around and see if it works. I usually use the Blogger one, but another field can't hurt. Good call!

About the "visited" field: Money Maus! Totally. The Boyfriend's working on that one, so hopefully it'll be fixed in the next few days.

About the recipe comps: They're in the Article section now, at the very end. I might put 'em on top, because they generally tend to be the most searched-for pieces. Hmmm...

About the soft-focus lasagna: I'm torn. Crisp edges would be keen, but I'm also digging the hazy, boudoir pasta thing we've got going. TO BE CONTINUED.

Thanks again, everyone!

it's looks sexy....any blog with a picture of lasagna on top deserves my first look of the day.

Agree with DMBY.. the lasagne photo looks out of focus, or like it's stretched too far. Maybe depends on the monitor?
Otherwise looks great!

Explorer users, is anyone having a problem with the display? It's working fine in Firefox and Safari, but Explorer seems to mush all the columns on the left side. The About/Recipes/Articles bar is floating in the middle of the banner, too. Is this just me?

I'm having the floating bar thing too in explorer

First time poster, and new reader...I absolutely LOVE the new layout!! I'm actually pretty fine with the color scheme(green screams "Kale" to me ^_^). The logo is a plus, and I wouldn't be surprised if the with the title picture and logo that your site got more hits!

I also noticed on explorer(though I use firefox, but I'm still a computer major so I have to worry about these things) that the bar does float to the left.

Love the new layout...wouldn't be surprised if you attracted more people here with it!!

Explorer does seem to act wonky though(use firefox mostly, but since I'm a computer major, I notice these things).

The logo is very cute. Lasagna--I have no opinion, I'm already scrolling down the postings and can't see it anymore. :0)

I really love your site -- it's a treasure chest of info (especially the seasonal veggies list!). However, when I saw the new layout, I balked. I don't know if it's my monitor or my Explorer settings, but the central column is so much narrower than before that I'm finding it difficult to read. That combined with the green background makes reading it almost impossible for me....

Content is still an A+ in my book, though! :)
